The Hospices de Beaune is first a hospital, called Philippe le Bon operating with modern equipment, but their duty to the most needy has never been forgotten.
The medical reception unit for the most destitute, set up in 1993, restores some of the long-forgotten socialisation to those whom life has abandoned on the side of the road. The two retirement homes and the Nicolas Rolin centre accommodate elderly people, more or less disabled with the problems of dependency, with the desire to offer them comfort and care. In parallel, the general hospital provides nursing care services, initial training for nurses and orderlies, based on the tradition of care of the hospital Sisters of the Hospices of Beaune: the Nurse Training Institute (I.F.S.I) is the general hospital department in charge of this training.
Today, the Hôtel-Dieu is a museum whose architectural splendour, unspoilt since the 15th century, is only equalled by the very modern ethic of the institution, which has never abandoned its original mission, to provide care and relief for the destitute who are victims of solitude or sickness. The income earned from the hiring out of prestigious rooms, visits to the museum and its shop are used to improve the conditions of accommodation and care, to modernise the general hospital and to conserve the heritage of the institution.
Equally, the vineyards generate a great deal of activity. The auction of its products is one of the essential annual events in the life of the Hospices and indeed in the whole world of Burgundy wine. It constitutes a charitable work faithful to the spirit of Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins, and the profit is consecrated to the policy of investment in care services and heritage.
The Hospices de Beaune are a unique institution, owing to the diversity of their activities, their importance in regional history and the maintenance of their original vocation. For these reasons, the world interest of this heritage has been recognised.
